James Earl was the first white settler in the Bessemer area in 1843. Around 1850 Horatio Merryweather made surveys of the Lake Superior Country and in 1867 Ralph Pompelli made surveys of the region. One of these parties left a lonesome and unmarked grave atop one of the bluffs overlooking the present city of Bessemer. [...]
